Opinion: Critical Thinking

It’s time to stop hitting the snooze button and WAKE UP. The “owners” of our country are hell bent on destroying the whole American Dream so they can get all the money. Nothing new about that. What’s new is this conflict has now become totally absurd.

Texas Republicans included in their 2012 Platform this bright idea:

“Knowledge-Based Education – We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.” (Valarie Strauss, Washington Post, 7-9-12)

Now why would any leadership organization oppose skills for thinking critically?

“A McDonald’s employee called the company’s McResource help line to ask what she could do to afford her heating bill, and the operator told her to use public assistance.
The recorded call was released just a week after a major report found that more than half of fast food workers rely on public assistance programs, costing taxpayers some $7 billion per year.” (UPI, 10-25-13)

And you were told we want to get people off of welfare and into good jobs.

“Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest private sector employer, is also the biggest consumer of taxpayer supported aid. According to Florida Congressman Alan Grayson, in many states, Wal-Mart employees are the largest group of Medicaid recipients. They are also the single biggest group of food stamp recipients.” (Barry Ritholtz Nov 13, 2013 Bloomberg)

And you wondered why Wal-Mart Employees were creating their own Thanksgiving food bank for fellow employees who could not afford to feed their families…..after all, they had “good jobs” with one of the biggest employers in the country. The family owners of Wal-Mart are worth more than 120 Billion Dollars and they oppose the establishment of a fair minimum wage. And currently Wal-Mart ads feature what a great place it is for a career.

It sounds like the next stop will be the government being forced to re-create 18th century workhouses where poor people were imprisoned for their poverty and forced to do menial labor.

The reality is, we have been trained to believe that food stamp recipients are welfare cheats who are too lazy to work. Given the facts, this is proof that we need to teach critical thinking from kindergarten on up.

Critical Thinking, should we ever teach it, would begin with moral precepts and community responsibility. When did we start to believe that Ayn Rand defined the soul of America? Rand’s Atlas Shrugged has been ranked as second only to the Bible as one of the most influential books in the lives of modern readers, and more than 30 million copies of her books have been sold. Her version of Individualism and The American Dream portrays a few strong characters whose drive and ambition gains the world for them at the price of the many.

There is nothing moral about this view of our purpose here. It is simply selfishness gone wild. As Americans we tell the world this is a free and supportive country, while at the same time we glorify pure self-interest, forgetting, among many others, President Teddy Roosevelt’s admonition that “This country will not be a permanently good place for any of us to live in unless we make it a reasonably good place for all of us to live in.”

The truth is, unless we become critical thinkers in the public discourse, we will see our country pass over the tipping point of no return to common decency and compassionate care for each other. And never doubt that Karma affects countries as it does individuals.

The Bible asks the question: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” And the Real Answer is, “No, we are our brothers’ brothers.” And it is time to wake up and have a family reunion.

Jean Logan, PH.D The POWER of Glyphs

She did the art for each glyph and found ways to use the glyphs locally on a person’s body a Chuck did in his knee surgery and also ways to project the power of these glyphs at a distance.

Opinion: What Is Needed Now?

Beginning in 1981, Dr. Don Edward Beck, pioneering user of Spiral Dynamics, which was developed by Dr. Claire Graves, applied this Values Integration Science in his personal work with Nelson Mandela to create the future South Africa.

Recently, Beck was at a conference where many of the attendees were making short presentations about their programs or products that were geared to improving our lives. One presenter made an impassioned plea for people to adopt his ideas presented in book and video form. At the end of that presentation, Don got up and said to the speaker, “If I gave you a check for $120 million dollars to support any one of the programs presented here today, what project would you give the money to?”

Don had just given a specific application from Spiral Dynamics.  The presenter was stumped.  He couldn’t even figure out what the question meant. Finally Don said to him “The reason you’re having a problem is you’re not asking the right questions. The right question is: “What is needed now?  Not, Who wants to buy my product or my book or my thought? Not, Whose idea is the best idea? The real issue is: What do we need now?”  This question is valid in almost any situation. It gets rid of a lot of the foolishness that occupies our time.  Let’s look at what would happen if we asked that question more frequently.

In the political world, we have seen, just this past week, there is a continuing battle over things that really don’t matter to the average citizen. You may have noticed in the last several weeks that the media have now divided the Republican Party into two groups. The first group is obviously the Tea Party and the second group is The Business Party. They go back and forth with each other trying to beat each other up, or beat each other down, or make some kind of a difference.  But you never hear them ask “What do we need now?”, nor do you hear the Democrats ask the same question.

What would happen if all three parties and the Congress and the President just up and said, “What do we need right now? What’s the best path to take, what’s the most important action we can take, what is needed now?”

What we need right now is for somebody to confront the fact that this economy has been going downward for the past 30 years. What was supposed to be a trickle-down process from the rich to the poor has, in fact, become exactly that! The wealthy are allowing only a trickle of their treasure to go to the middle class or the lower class or anybody else. And all of a sudden we have a country with one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world. Our schools no longer rank anywhere near the top 25 in the world. We have the largest percentage of citizens in prison, the most mass murders of any country in the world, a staggering percentage of people living below the poverty line. We also have the most money of any country in the world.

Did we really need a Sequester to prove that we wanted to control our expenses in this country? No. Do we really believe that a shrinking economy with less taxation is better than a robust economy that produces more taxes? And what about the question of food stamps? Suddenly, it appears as if people do not want the poor to have food stamps because they’re freeloaders.

How could it be that the supposedly richest nation on earth is willing to have 25% of its population unemployed or under-employed, living in poverty and without food or healthcare? Who could possibly say that what’s needed now is less help for our brothers and sisters?
When you look at what is happening you begin to see that somebody out there simply wants all the money. We do not know who this is, but somebody out there really does want all the money. And they are not going to easily give up their quest.

So, that means that you and I and our friends and total strangers are going to have to help our leaders figure out: “What do we need now?”.

It is important for us to take time to let our President, Governors and Legislators know what we think is needed now!

The Universe is……..

In time we will understand Einstein as a philosopher and futurist. He left one question that qualified him for both titles when he posed the following: “One must decide if the Universe is a Friendly Place…….or Not.”

There is plenty of proof that the Universe is a dangerous and destructively unfriendly place. From the violent creation of Black Holes to the latest mass shooting at LAX airport, the Universe gladly appears to be a tough, unjust and ruthless place to live. If this is your view, then you will see and experience every kind of destruction and you will create, with your fears, the very things you fear the most. The price for judging the Universe an unfriendly place is a life filled with sad proof.

There is also plenty of proof that the Universe is a friendly place. One of the outcomes of Quantum Physics is that you will begin to see the very things you want to see, only more. When we went looking for galaxies, we figured there might be one or two billion. Now we discover that the smallest and darkest corner in the Universe is a doorway to literally billions of galaxies, currently invisible to all but the most sophisticated telescope. And from this distance, these galaxies look friendly.

The reason Einstein posed this question is because it is the foundation for everything you experience in life. For example, you really cannot say God Is Love and God created the universe and man in his image, and then say it is a dangerous and unfriendly place. It is what God is……….and so are we, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

We have been put here to create with the power that is part of the image in which God created us. We are here to learn to grow and cooperate together in acts of friendship and kindness, acts that will result in a better life for us all. We can only do this when we live unafraid and hopeful.

Right now, our efforts are critical and they sometimes seem fruitless, as the economy and the climate and the world’s religions and uninformed politicians with scads of money seem unable to re-orient themselves to a shift that has already happened within a very large group of global citizens…….including you and me.

We know we have left an unfriendly world and Universe and we have chosen to see, hear, taste and experience a wonderful life in a wonderful Universe. Paul said the secret of this when he wrote in Phillipians 4:

“4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”

Now, we can help others decide about the Universe by living as if there was no other choice than to see a friendly Universe. As we do, we will begin to see ourselves as one with each other and one with the entire Universe. And, there will be less and less room for the folks who want to see a hopeless future or an unblessed present.
