Hill Country News 2014-11-26 Roundtable Article

Scott Coleman, Editor of the Hill Country News here in the Austin area, asked the regular columnists to discuss the Issue of Free Speech and Hate Speech and the Bill of Rights.

Here is how I dealt with this assignment:

Germany was one of the most cultivated countries in Europe. It was one of the leading players in the Enlightenment, and yet we discovered at the end of WWII, that a concentration camp can exist within the same vicinity as a university. Similar discoveries are happening in America today. We are discovering that our cherished freedoms and our hallowed Constitution have been placed in concentration camps for the mind.

Being in graduate school on the east coast in 1965, I was thrilled by Mario Savio and the Free Speech Movement at Sproul Hall in Berkley. I fervently believe in Free Speech….even with all its dangers. But in all the fear-based decisions America has made since 9-11, we have repeatedly and willfully given up the freedoms we tell our soldiers they are fighting for, that we teach our children to believe in, and we talk about as if they are sitting right next to us. However, these freedoms are long gone.

Behind the concept of free speech is the concept of critical thinking. A nation of people who are able to think critically can act responsibly in matters of freedom. For all of this century America has chosen not to think critically and we have taught our children, by example, not to think critically. In fact, right here in Texas, the 2012 Republican Platform forbade the teaching of critical thinking to Texas students because it would challenge and undermine parental authority.

Citizens who can think critically would never be tricked by crowds gathering to lynch gays, or black people, nor would we allow police to shoot unarmed people or our armies to invade any country whose actions offend us. For people who can think critically, freedom of speech is a basic requirement. If we are not free to speak the truth, we will never know the truth.

In our giving up the right to free speech, and the right not to be victimized by unlawful searches and seizures, and the right to peaceful assembly, keeping only the right to bear 20th century guns and bullets, we have convinced ourselves that living in a totally surveiled society has made us safe.

To test that out, watch the: Politically-Challenged: Texas Tech Edition on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRZZpk_9k8E) and you will be appalled at the voluntary and willful ignorance of the students at this highly regarded Texas university. This short video gives rich new meaning to the concept of dumbing our citizens down, right here in Texas.

As Christians we can look back on our history and see how we have been on both sides of free speech. Christians, even Texas Christians, have doled out a serious share of hate speech as recently as this past election. But forbidding free speech, making laws about ‘political correctness’, and trying to control this behavior will not work.

Outlawing things we do not like is not the way to change anything. It just puts that behavior underground where it can fester and mutate and come back to bite us when we least expect it. The only way to create change and to turn the volume down on hate speech is to present ourselves with behaviours, examples and models that inspire feelings of positivity, openness, acceptance and peace.

Behind all of this is the truly difficult lesson we most need to learn: ALL EIGHT BILLION OF US ARE ONE, WE ARE ALL CONNECTED and when we know the truth of that, we will set ourselves free to speak and do anything because we will know what we do to any one of us, we do also to ourselves.

To forget is human….to forgive is Divine! 2014-10-01 Hill Country News

By Chuck Robison 20120220-_MG_6032

Recently, an old friend called and said he had just found out why, when he told a story of one of our past adventures, it was different than how I would tell the same story. And then he explained what he had just learned as follows.

Memory is not located in a particular spot in the brain, but is contained all over the brain. Each memory is like a complete computer file, but it is not backed up anywhere nor is there any duplicate. So, when you bring up a memory, any memory, you open a file that then records every new way your thoughts and feelings and new understandings modify the memory, as it is being used. Then when you stop the memory, the file keeps and closes your most recent modifications to the file and it goes back into storage, with the new details, and it awaits the next time you will call up that memory.

The modifications you make to a memory file are unique to you and that explains why someone retelling his memory of the same event will have a dramatic discovery when comparing his memory to yours.

So the lesson here is that each of us has the built-in editorship ability to modify every memory we recall, and we use that ability every time we re-open a memory.

Now we go to the new truth of this idea. Bring up a memory that is particularly painful. Any painful memory will do. As soon as you begin to experience this memory, you will be in ‘edit’ mode and everything you think, feel or see in this memory will be added to the memory file, and all the past data in the file will be adjusted to include this new information.

So, in memories, as in all of life, we have considerable power to change how we want our life and world to feel and be.

Going back to this painful memory…..let’s say someone (or you yourself) really hurt you and you believe he deserves whatever pain he may be experiencing. But, you have no control over how this memory will affect him……..you control only how this memory pains you. Your wincing, when you bring up this memory, reveals how you have hurt yourself every time you have viewed this memory.

Try as we might, if seems hard to forgive someone (even yourself) who has hurt you so deeply. But your seeming inability to forgive this person is mainly hurting you.

So here is a powerful and effective way to finally forgive anything. When you have finished using an internal file that is so painful and seemingly unforgiveable, you are in a position to further modify that file and begin your healing.

This is how it is done. Before you close this file in your memory computer, add this simple statement to the file: “…..and all is forgiven.” This act prepares the file for the next time you open it. When that happens, the message you appended to this memory will be one of the first things you will notice and that will set up in your mind the intention to see this matter forgiven and you set free from your pain and hurt.

From that time forward, if you close a painful memory with “…..and all is forgiven.”, you will have set in motion the comprehensive solution to learning how to forgive.

Like all that you have made, memory can be used to serve the Holy Spirit’s Purpose. The Holy Spirit can use your memory because God is in your memory.

The miracle that God and the Holy Spirit will bring you in this process will be the Happy Consequences because your memory storehouse will be empty of your pain, and the open door holds all your shreds of memories and dreams. … These are the happy memories the miracle exchanges for your own. And through forgiving others, God leads you to inner peace.

Try it. What IF it really works?

Who is responsible for charity? August 20, 2014 Hill Country News

20120220-_MG_Small6032By Chuck Robison

“If this is going to be a Christian nation that does not help the poor, either we’ve got to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we’ve got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and admit that we just don’t want to do it” Stephen Colbert

Am I my brother’s keeper, or what?

This question, reveals that we are in a spiritual crisis in America that could be called an eclipse of compassion.

Somehow “The Haves” are concerned that when seeking help, “The Have Nots” are trying to cheat them and the system. The cry for compassion is lost amid the fear that any call for help is a scam.

Look at how America is seen around the world right now:

Three million Syrian refugees (1/3 are children) are living in the Jordanian desert while America seems more willing to find places on which to drop bombs than to find ways to support these refugees.

As many as 40,000 Central Americans are trying to escape the criminal takeover of their own countries and are being criminalized at the American border, themselves, for seeking asylum in America. This is underscored by the fact that America’s drug habit is being sustained through the collusion of the cartels and the highest levels of our government. Much easier to blame the refugees than to even look at how our drug dependence has created a six hundred billion dollar profit center for those in this country on the take.

In a response showing a monumental lack of compassion and wisdom, we seem more comfortable in deporting the refugee children than deporting the drugs and drug dealers who are already here. If we are being invaded by 11 year-old drug dealers, as some claim, that only reveals how deeply this nation is addicted to drugs.

In essence, the question is not “who is our brother’s keeper” but when will all of us understand that we are our brothers’ brothers. Until we realize that we have
almost 8 billion brothers and sisters, all connected on this planet, we will not be able to understand compassion.

As Manley P. Hall stated, “When mob governs, man is ruled by ignorance; when the church governs, he is ruled by superstition; when the state governs, he is ruled by fear.”

Before men can live together in harmony and understanding, ignorance must be transmuted into wisdom; superstition into illuminated faith, and fear into love.”

So ask yourself: Are you willing to let charity begin at your home?

Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men. Hill Country News. August 13, 2014

20120220-_MG_Small6032By Chuck Robison

If you think about confrontations over the past 100 years, August, more often than not, is the time of major global energy shifts. From the start of the First World War to the atomic bombs we released over Japan, to the start of the First Gulf War, to the Second Gulf War, and, now, today we have entered the Third Gulf War. And, once again, we are told it will be just short strategic airstrikes.

Yet, when you see faces of the instant orphans in Palestine, or the frail bodies of old people climbing hills in Iraq without benefit of water for over a week, or the violence indelibly written on the faces of religious soldiers in combat with another group from their own religion, you are confronted with the thought that the critics are right. Religion is the cause of almost all wars. If you doubt that, ask yourself why the Christians, the Jews and the Muslims have been at war, on and off for the better part of the past 1000 years.

This is especially difficult when you recognize that virtually all religions teach peace. Given the results, the heroic stories we bring back from wars should be reason enough to wake-up.

Military-Industrial Cheerleaders, like a recent US President, convinced us to begin a new Crusade, and, sure enough, he announced six weeks later, that everything is ok, “Mission accomplished!” So go home, get your money and your list and go shopping. This one paragraph explains why keen observers see that we have abandoned the central belief that we are citizens first and have become consumers. As long as we get ours, who cares?

But is this who we are?

I’m not that and I doubt you are either.

So what is happening?

I have friends and teachers who are exploring other dimensions of our multi-dimensional relationship with the universe. Gone are the days when we could exclaim with wonder at claims we are connected to our distant moon. What we are now exploring is our connection to the very center of our galaxy.

Here is what the explorers are finding for us. We are, most assuredly, not alone. We are experiencing complex and powerful forces that the center of the galaxy is sending us to remove the roadblocks created by our historical mistakes. Think of this as that special science fiction idea of a star gate. When the star gate opens additional positive energies are available to us to solve some of the most entrenched problems our species has created. Our explorers tell us that beginning last Friday, August 8, 2014, a big star gate has opened and will remain open until the 25th of August.

Using the energies coming to us through this star gate, we are empowered to change the world.

And, the title of this article is the key to the correct use of this exceptional energy we are receiving. Working together across religious boundaries, spiritual boundaries and national boundaries, those of us who are awakened to this new inter-dimensional conversation, realize that the best we can do is reflect the energy we are receiving from the Galactic Center to those situations before us that are causing so much pain and hurt and destruction.

What we will find when we do this is an old spiritual truth: we have it within our power to be the light atop the mountain of a pain-darkened world.

Because we see this happening, it is imperative that we stop studying war and become the instruments of peace. At our companies, our neighborhoods, our cities, our states and our nations, we are the ones who need to be expecting a miracle and the miracle we need will not be like others in the past.

What we are here to do is to receive the message and information that invites us to expand our awareness across the galaxy.

If you have read this far, Congratulations! What this energy is requesting you to do is as old as time itself. Come and see your brothers and sisters living in a peace that is being created by your awakening to what is really possible.

Today, the peacemakers, the Children of God, are assembling to complete the full arrival of peace coming to earth. Are you one of us?

Barbarians at the Gate – Hill Country News, July 16, 2014

You may have heard the stories of what happened to the “Okies” who left for the coast during the great dust storms and drought of the 1930’s. When they reached the state line of California, armed American citizens and guards, who forbade their entry into California on the basis that the Okies would destroy the state and its economy, met them.

Hatred ensued. Then, in time, California absorbed all of these unwanted immigrants and life went on.

Or, imagine what it would have felt like, when as a starving Irish parent, the only hope you had left for your children was to put them on a boat, alone, to travel to America and the outstretched hands of the Statute of Liberty, who wears these words: “Give me your tired, your poor,
 your huddled masses yearning to breathe free;
the wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
 send these; the homeless,
 tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” Contained within this quote is the secret history of the last 150 years of American History.

And now listen to Texas politicians and other assorted defenders of our liberty, speaking about the illegal hoards bursting over our border with Mexico. Chris Davis, a 37-year-old truck driver listed as commander for a militia group gearing up to repel the invasion, told the San Antonio Express-News he believes law enforcement agencies welcome the help.

The group will secure the border in a “legal and lawful manner” Davis said. However, in a 21-minute YouTube video of Davis, which was first reported by the McAllen Monitor on July 4, (which he has now removed) suggests otherwise.

“How?” Davis asked on the video. “You see an illegal. You point your gun dead at him, right between his eyes, and you say, ‘Get back across the border or you will be shot.'” Davis said the “influx of illegal immigrants is bringing bad elements” to the country such as “sickness”.

Governor Rick Perry suggested that President Barack Obama could be leading a conspiracy to bring immigrants into the country. The Congress of the United States has refused to do anything at all about the Immigration Issues in hopes of being able to blame all of this on a duly elected President just before the fall election season.

Now imagine what would happen if our drought continues and we experience loss of water and major fires. Imagine gangs of thugs and billionaires who form groups to control what water is left, and these people enforce their power with guns, and many people are being killed, including children.

So the logical solution would be to attempt to emigrate to Arkansas and the water and springs there. All of a sudden, your lonely and painful trip to Arkansas and safety is met at the Texas border by angry Arkansas mobs feeling Texans and their overblown egos will finally ruin their state and lifestyle.

Now, as we all know, that could never happen in Texas. We fought them off at the Alamo and we will repel this invasion as well. And proudly we hail as a Republican Tea Party state, primarily of white people, who are all Christians.

So let’s ask the obvious question of our Christian selves in this situation: What would Jesus do? Do you really think he would tell the little children to go home to be killed? Or would he say: “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.”

While we’re deciding who we really are in this situation, you might consider the end of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath when the Okie, Ma Joad, speaking for all immigrants who have met hatred when they arrive in America, says: “I ain’t never gonna be scared no more. I was, though. For a while it looked as though we was beat. Good and beat. Looked like we didn’t have nobody in the whole wide world but enemies. Like nobody was friendly no more. Made me feel kinda bad and scared too, like we was lost and nobody cared…. Rich fellas come up and they die, and their kids ain’t no good and they die out, but we keep a-coming. We’re the people that live. They can’t wipe us out, they can’t lick us. We’ll go on forever, Pa, cos we’re the people.”

Thanks for reading this far and thanks, too, for your support and contribution!

Water, water everywhere….Our Latest Hill Country News Opinion Column

20120220-_MG_Small6032By Chuck Robison

The nattering nabobs of negativity, A.K.A. the US Congress, have successfully crippled our national government, rather than allow the duly elected President to fulfill his responsibilities to lead the country where it clearly wants to go. They proudly proclaim they have been against virtually everything that might improve our country.

Our country does not want a pipeline right down its center to deliver Canadian oil to Houston for shipment to China. Our country does not want to have weapons for everyone without at least a minor background check. Our country does not want us to continue the wrong path we travelled since prohibition in the 1920’s and tried again with the so-called drug war, which we started in the late sixties, and have spent mega millions of dollars with no results, other than populating the nation’s for-profit-prisons with the 2.8 million prisoners, the highest prison population on earth, and most of them for minor drug offenses. And our country does not want another Three Trillion Dollar, lie-driven war in the Middle East!

Another current example of something we do not want is the recent petition by 300,000 citizens of Detroit to the UN for help in fighting their city’s pro-privatization, billionaire-driven, decision to cut off water to tens of thousands of people, simply because they cannot afford to pay their bills.

In response, United Nations experts declared last Wednesday, that the City of Detroit’s shut-off of water to thousands of job-less residents, who are unable to pay their bills, “constitutes a violation of the human right to water” and may be discriminatory against African-Americans.

“The households which suffered unjustified disconnections must be immediately reconnected,” said UN Special Rapporteur on adequate housing Leilani Farha, UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights Philip Alston, and UN Special Rapporteur on the right to safe drinking water and sanitation Catarina de Albuquerque, in a joint statement issued Wednesday.”

“If these water disconnections disproportionately affect African Americans they may be discriminatory, in violation of treaties the U.S. has ratified,” said Farha.”

This crisis for 300,000 Detroit citizens is a stunning signal of how screwed up we have allowed our country to become. This particular issue portends what could easily happen right here in drought-ridden Texas. Suppose our elected leaders, backed by billionaires’ cash, proposed to privatize Texas water. Would we put up with that denial of our rights, as we have with so many of our other rights?

The mere fact that our citizens are so disillusioned and hurt by the care-less management of serious problems right here in America, completely signals, for me, that we have lost our way. Imagine our citizens feeling the only re-course they have, in life threatening situations, is to call on the UN!

While we have been out invading every third world country we can, America is becoming one itself. This is not a political problem…….this is the very definition of a national spiritual crisis.

What is it going to take to convince us that we must come together and co-operate with each other to improve our lives? Are we going to wait for Ronald Reagan’s prediction that only an alien invasion will make us band together for our own wellbeing and common wealth? Isn’t a total breakdown of our environment, happening right now, enough?

And the next time someone tells you that the environmental problem cannot have been caused by man’s actions, buy them a first class ticket to Oklahoma and encourage them to discuss with the citizens of our neighbor state, how it is that only since the destructive fracking of the Oklahoma landscape, has there been a massive and catastrophic increase in major earthquakes there.

Telling ourselves more lies about what is happening to our country and our world is the story of The Emperor’s New Clothes, made new for our times. While you are thinking about that, how long is it going to take us to explore what happened to make our cherished Constitution full of quaint lies and no more than “just a piece of paper”, as one recent US President said?

It seems to me that we MUST move up to another level of consciousness in order to deal with these kinds of problems. As Einstein said: You cannot solve problems on the level at which they were created.

Actually, this is an old problem partially solved by Ben Franklin when he said “……unless we stand together, we shall all hang alone.”

Happy Independence Day!
