The Great Emeregence: Hill Country News Faith Roundtable

Round Table Discussion: The Bible as Literal or as Allegory

By Chuck Robison

The Question about the Bible as being literal is a valid one and deserves the responses at this Round Table discussion. However for me, the issue is not about the Bible as history or story….these questions are a sub-set of a larger discussion dealing with the issue of Authority.

Our history for the past 2000 years reveals the efficacy of the myth of the Phoenix…..a bird who flies about for 500 years and then is consumed in a fire of cinnamon twigs. From the ashes of that fire, a new Phoenix is born and flies off for another 500 years.

Two things happened around 500 hundred years ago that perfectly illustrate the truth of this myth. First, the printing press enabled some in the church to make the Bible available to a larger audience. Prior to that, the teachings of the Bible were on handwritten documents, which were the domain of the Catholic Church. The average Christian got his Bible knowledge from the priest. This resulted in the Church being the culture’s authority on life and how it should be lived.

Second, Luther used this availability of the Bible as a means to undermine the rule of the Catholic Church as the culture’s sole authority. The Reformation was based on the Bible as the ultimate authority. The Protestors deemed the Bible as having the history of the faith and the clear rule for the society; and they attempted to take it literally.

Then in the mid-1800’s Biblical scholars began trying to understand what was literal and what was a story of some kind. This caused a division between those who wanted the Bible to be literally true as a condition of its authority and the allegory side of the division said that the Bible is both literal and allegorical.

So here in the past 160 years we have seen a path leading up to the Return of the Phoenix. Today, the old Phoenix has been consumed in the fire of time and a new Phoenix is with us. Described by Phyllis Tickle and other scholars, this next 500 years will become known as the Great Emergence. This period is already moving past the Bible as the cultural authority and a new authority is coming forward.

Trouble is, we do not know exactly what this new authority will be. This creates doubt, confusion and most importantly, uncertainty for those souls who need absolute certainty in order to live their lives. These Bible literalists are able to gloss over the unworkable rules and conflicts of the Bible, like the Book of Leviticus and all the old Jewish rules that are no longer observed, and believe that their version of the Bible is historically correct……like the earth being created in six 24 hour days. The conflict in the recognition of these contradictions and irreconcilable differences is a sure sign that the Bible is no longer the cultural authority.

Something new this way comes. The Great Emergence is riding on the back of our global electronic experience, just as the Reformation of the Protestors rode the newly available Bible as the authority for the next 500 years. We have entered a period of confusion and conflict in almost every one of our past cultural norms. As the old paradigm leaves time’s stage, our welcoming the New Paradigm, The Great Emergence, is a powerful and difficult experience. But it is happening.

For my part I see The New Authority of the Great Emergence as the common understanding that what we experience as we attempt to live in higher levels of consciousness and new dimensions of reality is becoming the cultural authority. In these higher experiences we understand that all is one, there is only one God with many many names, one eternity and one rule that cancels out the duality of the past and becomes the oneness-glue of all experience.

That rule is love. God is love and he creates us in his image…..we, too, are love.
Now that our global vision is instantly electronic and we see life as it is happening all over the world, our new understanding of our oneness of life makes it possible to accept the authority of love and oneness as the cultural norm.

Funny thing. Even though we are experiencing this massive upheaval in the Great Emergence, one rule seems to follow us wherever the Phoenix flies. And that rule is this: DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU.

“40” Faith Article for 2014-03-20 in Hill Country News

20120220-_MG_Small6032 By Chuck Robison

It’s remarkable how we Christians have narrowed our view about the past. The farther back we look, the less we see….even though it is right there before us.

Take the number 40. To our species this number is critical and everywhere you see it, it translates to its’ original meaning.

That meaning is this: When our species was quite young, all births were Virgin Births. The reason for that is we did not know the process of conception. The whole affair was a woman’s issue. Women conceived, bore, raised and guided all the children in the tribe. And, of course, women were in charge. A matriarchy.

And then one day a very bright ancestor of ours discovered that 40 weeks after he had mated with one of the women, a baby arrived! Walla! Now the man was clearly involved in the women’s domain and he wasted no time in tearing down some of the old myths. Babies were named after the father. The end of virgin births came to pass and religion sealed the deal when the baby was consecrated in the name of the father. Now we had a patriarchy.

All of a sudden 40 weeks takes on a symbolic meaning much greater than we thought. Forty is the universal signal for growth and birth, and when it is used in history, the story is usually about that. Noah prepares for 40 days of difficult change and then a new genetic strain of man and animals species survive the flood and life begins again.

The Jews wandered for 40 years before being given the lands they considered as God’s gift to them.

Jesus spent 40 days alone in the wilderness before he began his life’s work. He returned to that work when his life was fully directed and fully empowered.

It’s an interesting point that many plants in the deserts are hallucinogenic. It is possible that Jesus was about to gather more of his powers through a process that other indigenousness cultures still use today.

So the church fathers may or may not have known this long history of 40 or the importance of that number to our species’ history, but by making Lent begin 40 days before Easter, they followed the real meaning of this original pagan rite of spring.

It is our understanding that in the 40 days prior to Easter we are being prepared for a new experience. And of course we need to make room for that. Thus this 40 day period is a preparation for our new life and a cleaning-up of the things that have hindered our lives in the past.

Because this naturally timed season has been around since before recorded time, you can be certain that your observance of Lent and Easter is supported not only by Christian Tradition, but also by the genetic memory of our species.

Your use of this time before Easter can be a powerful spiritual tool to use in raising your consciousness and in speeding up your spiritual experience. There is new life energy coming to this hemisphere within a month. It is open to all and the story of Jesus’ resurrection is there to demonstrate to you to have no fear of death nor massive change.

As we let go of the harm we have done to others, and ourselves and realize that God is Love and Life is Eternal, we free ourselves from the guilt of the past and the fear of the future.

We were put in this garden to grow and be happy. To do that requires one main thing: Every day, as often as you can, just think about God, and God will take care of everything else. That’s the big secret.

It is simple beyond measure and powerful beyond out wildest dreams. Come and see.

Opinion: The Sheep Look Up / 2014-03-05

20120220-_MG_6032By Chuck Robison

The Sheep Look Up is a science fiction novel by British author John Brunner published in 1972.  Reading it in 1975 seared my memory with the awful thought that this same story could happen here.  The plot is centered on the rise of a corporation-sponsored government, pollution in big cities has reached extreme levels and most (if not all) people’s health has been affected in some way.

By the end of the book, rioting and civil unrest sweep the United States, due to a combination of poor health, poor sanitation, lack of food, lack of services, ineffectiveness of services (medical, policing), disillusionment with government/companies, oppressive government, high incidence of birth defects (pollution-induced), and other factors; all services (military, government, private, infrastructure) break down.

The people cause this destruction by acting like sheep, going along with the crowd and not paying attention to what is happening right before their eyes, until it is too late for positive action.

Something like this is happening in America now.  We have begun to think of ourselves as well informed by the 24 hour news cycle, yet we  know nothing other than what the various propaganda machines tell us.  And they are telling us two huge lies.

The first lie is that there is no global warming and people who contest that are using that as an excuse to make money.  Remember the Inconvenient Truth of Al Gore?  Fox News convinced a lot of people that the global warming issue was just Gore’s way to make money.

For some reason at least 55% of the American population does not accept what is clearly obvious.  From bee colony collapse to radiation from Japan lapping at the West Coast beaches to dramatic shifts in weather patterns and the melting of the polar ice caps, we are confronted with all the evidence needed to prove there is a problem, or problems. Yet we are not willing to solve or even look at this evidence.  Not surprisingly, 97% of the world’s climate scientists have closed the debate and accepted the fact that we are polluting and heating up our world.

The second lie is also a product of the anti-intellectualism of the American character.  Right now more than 46% of our population claims not to believe in evolution.  They consider themselves supported by God in their beliefs.  Yet by denying evolution and insisting it be stomped out, they are closing the door on the real solution that could take us through this global crisis.

God built us to evolve.  It makes no difference where we came from; the issue is where are we going.  There is a target for evolution’s process.  We are meant to become much, much more in the future than we are today as individuals and as a species.

Denying evolution’s process and target is a way to block our progress and insure our demise.

Nevertheless, the people telling us these two lies are using them to control us and to make money.

But there is change ahead.  As one era ends it must necessarily share the stage of time with the beginning of a new era.  We see the truth of our situation being revealed daily….from the NSA files to the GMO foods poisoning our bodies. It is the end of the world as we know it.  The New Era, now being born, will arrive bringing with it the new man, Homo Luminous, the man of light.

Daily we are given the opportunity to find new solutions and paths.  But too many seem more empowered by defending the lies we have accepted for so long.

If knowing the truth is the gatekeeper to living in freedom, then it is mandatory that we be willing to tell the truth to each other and ourselves.  And the truth is this:  we have reached the end of an era, and if we want to enter the new era, we must take responsibility for the unfinished business of the past and prepare ourselves and our planet for a totally new understanding of why we are here.

As we do that, we will demonstrate to our brothers and sisters that in bringing light to all the dark caves of consciousness we have been living in, we are creating a new world for evolution’s next step, Homo Luminous.

Of course, I could be wrong.
